A New Gheenoe!

My son Eric loves to fish. He has never been much of a kayak angler, but he has won a kayak fishing tournament. He fishes from shore, bridges, anything. We have enjoyed many fishing for bass together since he could walk.

Recently, he bought a Gheenoe. We talked at length about what he needed and what he wanted on the boat. He finally found one on Craigslist in our area and picked it up. We both work 12 hour days so it was a few days before we could get together and try her out.

The boat is a 15”er and has an 8hp motor as well as a trolling motor up front. I have had Gheenoes before, but this is Eric’s first. We began our hour long “shakedown” in Estero Bay and quickly found a patch of mangroves that looked fishy. Eric broke out the trolling motor and we moved along the leafy shoreline looking for reds. Finding none, we moved on.

We hit the Bay’s central flats and set up a drift. It wasn’t long before we began landing keeper trout. Eric caught the first fish on his first boat the first time we took it out. That’s pretty cool. After a few minutes, we moved on again, hitting some shoreline I haven’t seen in many years, since I have been kayak fishing.

All too soon it was time to load up. Eric piloted the boat well and trailered it like a pro. The boat was comfortable for the both of us and very fishable. We both look forward to the adventures we will share on his new boat!
